Marine biologist Roger Hanlon shot this footage some time ago but it’s enjoying a renaissance, mostly because it’s one of the most amazing videos humans have ever seen. Seriously, watch a perfectly camouflaged octopus appear out of nowhere and feel your mind go blank with wonder. The octopus belongs to a group of underwater creatures called cephalopods, who are such masters of camouflage that if they went to war there probably wouldn’t be a single casualty because the enemy could never be seen. In fractions of a second, these creatures can match the color and texture of their surroundings by changing pigment spots on their skin called chromatophores. Intriguingly, scientists still don’t know exactly how these color-blind animals create such perfect matches.

September 16, 2013Oktoberfest
September 13, 2013In 5 short years, McKinney Oktoberfest has become a family favorite community event for our citizens and visitors across the globe. We continue to draw crowds in excess of 30,000 to Historic Downtown during this two-day event. This year we are pulling out all the bells and whistles to ensure that we hit this fall celebration out of the park.
The biggest addition you will notice this year is an expanded “beer garden” perimeter and our event will essentially be located on a total of 14 blocks throughout downtown. McKinney will once again meet Bavaria as our special event comes to life in Historic Downtown McKinney. This year’s event begins on Friday, September 27 and continues through Saturday, September 28.

Baby is cured of HIV after aggressive early treatment, doctors say
March 4, 2013A Mississippi baby born with HIV has been declared cured after 2 1/2 years of treatment, giving hope to millions of people worldwide. This would be the second-ever documented case of a patient cured of the AIDS virus. (The first was a man in Berlin in 2007, who was treated with a bone-marrow transplant.) Although it’s just one patient and we can’t assume everything that worked for this baby will work for others, it’s still bringing hope to doctors about the possibilities for treating children born with HIV. The child received an “aggressive antiretroviral treatment” within 31 hours of birth, a more intense and immediate dose than what the World Health Organization currently calls for. Doctors believe it might have stopped the virus from making “viral reservoirs” in this young patient. They say they see occasional “signals” of the virus in her system, but they can detect no viral activity, which they call a “functional cure.”
